Bishop King presides over his first Annual Conference session in South Georgia
By Kara Witherow, Editor
They came from Brunswick and Buena Vista, from Macon and Moultrie, from Albany and Americus.  More than 1,200 South Georgia United Methodist clergy and laity gathered together June 7 10 at the Columbus Civic Center to worship God, conference in the Wesleyan tradition, vote on proposed constitutional amendments and fellowship together.

Bishop James R. King, Jr., presiding over his first Annual Conference session since becoming the resident bishop of the South Georgia area, set the tone for the conference during the opening worship service on Monday morning.  He challenged worshippers to grow a Christlike world and to focus on five areas of their spiritual life in order to grow more like Christ: worship, Christian education, fellowship accountability, evangelical witnessing and justice ministry. Benevolent benefactor donates $500,000 to CCPI; challenges Georgians to match
By Kara Witherow, Editor
South Georgia United Methodists recently had the opportunity to help meet the needs of retirees in the Central Conferences (outside the U.S.) through a conference-wide special offering that was received at the 2009 Annual Conference session to support the Central Conference Pension Initiative..  This opportunity has been made even more significant by a $500,000 donation by an anonymous donor in Georgia.  This donor has challenged United Methodists in both the South and North Georgia Annual Conferences to respond with donations of their own.  There is potential for an additional gift later in the year depending on the level of support generated among Georgia United Methodists.  The donor is challenging every local United Methodist Church to participate significantly in the campaign so that together the original gift of $500,000 can be matched or exceeded. Will You?
By Kara Witherow, Editor
When a young suitor asks his intended, Will you marry me, they celebrate with joy and embark together to begin to join their new lives. And when two people come together in marriage, they rejoice in their union as one.

In the gospel of John, the second chapter, in the story of the wedding in Cana, readers are given a glimpse into a wedding celebration and bear witness to Jesus' first miracle. In this opening miracle, Jesus celebrates the joining of lives together in marriage.  In much the same way, those who attended the Tuesday night Service of Worship during Annual Conference celebrated the church's union with Christ as they shared how God is working in and through the lives of South Georgia United Methodists.

The night's worship experience, a wedding feast inspired by the story of the wedding in Cana, was an experiential service that piqued all senses. Tables were elaborately outfitted with vases of multi-colored roses and candles, goblets of juice, and plates of bread and oil, evocative of what the guests at the Cana wedding may have dined upon. Guests were invited to break bread together and fellowship with one another during the evening's service. More>>
