The Purpose of United Methodist Women
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
The United Methodist Women of the South Georgia Conference will host their annual Spiritual Growth Retreat March 26 – 28 at Epworth By The Sea on St. Simons Island.
Coming together under the theme of “Preparing the Way of the Lord,” retreat participants will hear speaker Dr. Charlene Black bring inspiration and motivation to the group during the retreat’s sessions and have opportunities on Saturday to participate in two interest groups.
“I was at a retreat once and heard the speaker say, ‘Jesus went apart so he wouldn’t come apart.’ I’ll always remember that,” said UMW president Sara Bankhead. “For me, this spiritual growth retreat has been a time for me to get away from everything that was bombarding me from all sides and spend some time in reflection, study, fellowship with others and to be filled with the Holy Spirit so that I could go back into my everyday life at the end of the retreat and feel like I had come back together and not come apart.”
The retreat, open to anyone interested in participating, has become an intergenerational weekend, with all ages represented and encouraged to attend. Two special interest groups are specially designed for young adult and teen participants. Other special interest groups include “Standing at the Crossroads,” “In Stitches,” and “Mary, Mother of Jesus.”
Beginning with registration on Friday afternoon, March 26 and ending after lunch on Sunday, March 28, the retreat is designed to help participants grow in spirit and in truth.
“We’re pulled in so many different ways,” Bankhead said. “How do we prepare ourselves to be filled by God, to be used by God?"
